Former Home And Away star Lynne McGranger was rushed to hospital after being pulled from the water “limp” and “lifeless” while filming the new Channel 9 program, SHARK!.

The 73-year-old was among celebrities earning their scuba qualifications, with the ultimate goal to swim with tiger sharks without a cage.

The Gold Logie winner was seven metres underwater when her mask began to fill with water and the decision was made to take her to the surface.

Lynne admitted she wasn’t the strongest swimmer, telling Yahoo Lifestyle she had “never done anything like this” in her life.

“I’ve never put on a BCD (buoyancy control device), I’ve never worn tanks on my back, I’ve never tried to breathe underwater, and I’d certainly, with the exception of growing up on Bondi Beach, never really had much to do with being under the water at all,” the actress said.

As Lynne’s mask filled, she struggled against the choppy water and became exhausted.

Paul de Gelder, a former Navy clearance diver, said when you’re underwater and start breathing in, it’s a dangerous situation.

“She could drown in her mask,” he said.

Shark expert Annie Guttridge tried to calm Lynne as she was stripped of all her gear.

“She was pretty lifeless, her body was quite limp,” Annie said when Lynne was pulled up.

“And I could see some of the colour in her face had been removed.”

Lynne was pulled from the water, coughing and spluttering, unable to engage with the instructors.

When asked if she was OK, she simply replied, “no”.

“I don’t feel great,” Lynne said.

A medic put an oxygen mask on her and she was rushed to land, where a hospital was on standby.

The medical incident was put down to exhaustion, but Annie feared Lynne could have suffered from “secondary drowning”, which occurs when water goes into your lungs.

Lynne told Yahoo Lifestyle about a standout issue she encountered while filming the show.

“I struggled very much with my buoyancy because I’m very small from the waist down, and they can’t give you weights around your legs, because you have to suddenly, in an emergency, drop them, that’s too difficult,” Lynne said.

Lynne was featured on the show with Tammy Hembrow, Scott Cam, Ariarne Titmus, Matt Nable and Sam Thaiday.

The cast was shaken by what happened to her, with Matt refusing to participate further until he knew Lynne was alright.

It was a stark turn from earlier in the episode, where Lynne and Scott volunteered to swim across a shark corridor.

The episode ended with a cliff hanger about Lynne’s condition, however we do know she bounced back and is due to reappear on the show when the next episode airs on Sunday.

The show ended up being pulled from broadcast in Perth following a fatal shark attack off Rottnest Island two weeks ago.

A spokesperson for Channel 9 told Yahoo Lifestyle the program was delayed given sensitivities around the 38-year-old father’s death.

Before appearing on the show, Lynne told Yahoo Lifestyle she’d been keeping fit since leaving the Channel 7 soap.

“I keep very fit, which I love, sometimes seven days a week … We exercise outdoors, so I did a boxing class yesterday,” Lynne said.

“We do a lot of weights, a bit of running, I do pilates, and when I’m not doing that, I walk.”
